Cash sitting in a regular chequing account earns almost nothing — and in 2026, the gap between the worst and best place to park Canadian cash is worth hundreds of dollars a year. Our Smart Money Life video compares the three real options: high-interest savings accounts, GICs, and money market funds. Here is the written version.
The free Money Pack pairs with this guide — and Pai Ledger HQ puts it into practice, starting with a free trial.
A HISA at an online bank or credit union typically pays several times the interest of a traditional savings account, with the same CDIC insurance up to $100,000 per insured category. A GIC trades access for yield: commit for one to five years and the rate is guaranteed — break it early and you usually forfeit the interest. A money market fund pools cash-like investments; it is low-risk but it is an investment, so its value can wiggle slightly and it carries no CDIC guarantee.
Emergency fund and money needed within a year: HISA, full stop — access beats yield when the roof leaks. A known expense in one to three years, like a home down payment you will not touch: a GIC ladder can add yield without risk. Cash inside an investment account waiting for opportunities: a money market fund keeps it earning without leaving the brokerage. The video walks through a worked comparison of the same $10,000 in all three.

Banks advertise promotional rates that last three to five months, then quietly drop to a much lower everyday rate. Before moving money, find the post-promotion rate in the fine print and compare that number instead. Chasing every teaser can still pay if you enjoy the admin — but set a calendar reminder for the day the teaser ends, because the bank is counting on you forgetting.

If the institution is a CDIC member, deposits are insured up to $100,000 per insured category — the same protection as the big banks. Check the CDIC member list before opening.
Interest is taxed as income outside a TFSA. If you have TFSA room and no higher-priority use for it, holding your HISA inside the TFSA shelters the interest completely.
It varies with rates and terms, but the premium for locking in is often modest. Only lock money you are certain you will not need — the flexibility of a HISA is worth real money in an emergency.
Every guide in this section started as a video on one of our YouTube channels, and the written version is checked against that video's own script before it is published. Account and tax figures are stated with the year they apply to, drawn from the rules published by the CRA and the IRS and from the banks and funds each guide names. We do not invent numbers: if a figure is not in the video or a source the guide names, it is not in the guide. When a rule changes, we update the guide — and the “last verified” date at the top of this page changes with it. Everything here is educational only — not financial, tax, legal or investment advice for your specific situation.
